Here follows a history of the school as published on the Fairfax County Public Schools website:

The West End School, located on Little River Turnpike, was constructed in 1909 to replace an earlier public school in the vicinity. Designed by architect Charles M. Robinson, the school was located south of the George Washington Masonic National Memorial and can be seen in this aerial photograph that was taken in 1923 during the memorial’s construction. This area was part of Fairfax County until 1915, when it was annexed by the City of Alexandria.
