Here follows an excerpt from "Post WW2 History of Springfield, Virginia and The Crestwood Construction Corporation" as written by Robyn Carter:
Given Springfield's relationship with Shirley Highway, it was natural that accommodations were needed where weary travelers, visiting relatives, and interested parties in the Springfield experience would spend some time. First came The Skylark Motel, which was a large, brick completely modern facility that included "125 Air Conditioned Sound Proof Units, Singles, Doubles, Studies, Suites, Crystal Swimming Pool, Kiddies' Pool, Playground, Dining Room, Coffee Shop, Telephone in Every Room, Television, Service Station." The dining room also served as Springfield's first restaurant that was enjoyed by local residents as well as motel guests.
The Skylark was sold to the Howard Johnson's chain in 1958 and operated as such for about twenty-two years until in 1980 it was sadly torn down for redevelopment. The TownePlace Suites Hotel by Marriott now stands on the site.
