The Ramsay House (City Historical Marker)

Here follows the inscription written on this roadside historical marker:

The Ramsay House
Owned by William Ramsay, a founder of Alexandria in July, 1749, and first Mayor. Restored by the City of Alexandria in 1956 and dedicated to the memory of Mrs. Robert Miller Reese (Rebecca Ramsay) (1870–1955), great-great-granddaughter of William Ramsay.

Erected by City of Alexandria.

EDITOR'S NOTE: This marker is just behind the lamp post in the archway to the right of the chimney. The nearby Historic Alexandria Marker is to the right.

Here follows an excerpt from the "Jaybird's Jottings" blog written by Jay Roberts:

Ramsay House
221 King Street

William Ramsay was one of the founders of the city and its first mayor. Through the years, the Ramsay House has done more to keep folks content than perhaps any other. Believed to be the city’s oldest structure (built in 1724), this two story corner house has been a cigar factory, tavern and for the past several decades, home to the Visitor’s Center.

In the 1950s, the sagging wood had a date with the wrecking ball. The City Council and preservationists intervened. It’s a lovely spot, with a small garden and a commanding view of the river. Guided tours begin here and the center does a brisk business.
