Here follows an excerpt from "Post WW2 History of Springfield, Virginia and The Crestwood Construction Corporation" as written by Robyn Carter:
Some competition to Springfield's hotel industry came on January 16, 1954 further down the highway at Newington, where Mr. Herbert C. Hunter opened his hotel and restaurant complex. The Hunter Restaurant was a local favorite for great food, wonderful dessert pies, a venue for wedding receptions as well as other events and meetings for many a Springfield resident. Having been one of the longest surviving Springfield area businesses and surviving despite the tragic murder of Mr. Hunter during a robbery on January 7, 1976, it too unfortunately fell to "progress" in early 2012 being replaced by a large chain hotel, Embassy Suites by Hilton. Mr. Hunter was a generous and very beloved member of the Springfield community who donated land for the Greater Springfield Volunteer Fire Department Station number 22 and the local Masonic Lodge to be built on where Backlick Road meets the Franconia-Springfield Parkway today.
