Old Town Alexandria Commemorative Plaques:
Tavern Square
110 N. Royal
The Market Square re-development centered on public space. This portion of Phase I saw offices and shop go up.
Washington Post writer Maurine McLaughlin noted that public sentiment was generally favorable toward Market Square but against the construction of retail and office space in neo-Colonial style. On the other hand, the old saying of you can’t argue with success applied here. All retail and 90% of office space filled up.
Today, one of the busiest doors in this block (King, N. Pitt, Cameron and N. Royal) is Pat Troy’s Irish Pub and Restaurant, famous for their Shepherd’s Pie and hosting of President Reagan on St Patrick’s Day in 1988.
