Springfield House (Site)

Beyond the private gated entrance, down a tree-lined driveway, lies a beautiful historic estate located on 6.8 acres, nestled between Pohick Bay, George Mason’s Gunston Hall, and the Mason Neck State Park. Once part of George Mason's Gunston Hall estate, this land was given to a member of Mason's family and the stone walls of the original Springfield/Cockburn house (established 1763) serve as the foundation to the German bankbarn/garage today.

Here follows an excerpt from Donald Hakenson's "This Forgotten Land" tour guide:

Unfortunately, the original house is no longer standing. Springfield was the home of Martin Cockburn, who was the Uncle of Admiral Sir George Cockburn, who in the War of 1812 commanded the British squadron which harried the towns and plantations along the Chesapeake country, and who conceived the plan for attacking the Capitol in Washington City. In a little graveyard at Springfield are two unmarked mounds which tradition points out as the final resting places of Martin Cockburn and his wife.

After the Civil War, Private Andrew Jackson Haislip, who served with Mosby's Rangers bought Springfield. Private Haislip is buried at Pohick Church. Official records document that he was wounded in action in 1864.

The current house was built over the foundation of the old Springfield house in 1891.
