Nursery Beds (Historical Marker)

Here follows the inscription written on this trailside historical marker:

Nursery Beds
"I entirely approve…of establishing large Nurseries of every kind of plant that i fit for hedges."
George Washington to Farm Manager Anthony Whiting
December 9, 1792

Tender shoots and cuttings were carefully nurtured in these beds until they were sturdy enough to be transplanted. Washington devoted most of the nursery beds to practical plants — honey locust, willows, and thorns that could be used to create "live" fences. He occasionally propagated boxwoods, shrubs and trees.
