Mount Nebo Pentecostal Church

Here follows an excerpt from the church's website:

History:
Mt. Nebo was established in 1957 by the late Overseer Vivian Irene Posey. The church was named after the mountain mentioned in Deuteronomy 34:1.

'And Moses went up from up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over Jericho. And the Lord showed him all the land of Gilead unto Dan...'

When the Lord lead her into starting her own ministry, the first church residence was in a one room building on 400 South Columbus Street in Alexandria, Virginia. God sent the church true servants willing to work for Him, and as the congregation grew, the Mt. Nebo family, in 1958, moved to 815 Queen Street. The final move, in January of 1970, brings us to the building that we call home on 2300 Burke Avenue. It had taken only seven years for Overseer Vivian I. Posey and congregation to pay off the mortgage on the church. As God continued to bless financially, He also blessed spiritually by adding more souls to the church. Overseer Posey established a church motto that she stood by until her death.

Overseer Posey established the Vivian I. Posey Society that went around the community and helped those in need. There was no limit to the giving that was generated by such a loving, kind-hearted Pastor, who also did not sugar coat the word when she spoke to her congregation. Whether her words were of chastisement or encouragement, they were always given in love and with the scriptures as her backup. Many Pastors in the community started their journey with the Lord at Mt. Nebo and thus the church continued to grow internally and externally. When God felt that Overseer Vivian I. Posey had completed her mission for the Lord, He called her up to glory in April of 1986. Overseer Posey was missed by all in the community for her spiritual and natural works, but her motto is still carried on by her congregation to this day. We will always remember this woman that God had blessed us to come in contact with here at Mt. Nebo.

Following Overseer Posey's death, the church elected Elder Marvin Scott as leader of the church. Elder Scott held office as Pastor of Mt. Nebo for eight years. Elder Scott held on to many ideals that Overseer Posey had believed in and preached to the congregation about making sure that your works and deeds separated you from the sinners. Elder Scott eventually moved on to build his own church ministry.

After the departure of Elder Scott, the church voted and established Richard J. Hunter as Pastor of Mt. Nebo. Pastor Hunter grew up at Mt. Nebo and so carried on the teachings established by Overseer Vivian I. Posey. He served as pastor for five years. During the years after our founder's death, Mt. Nebo has had some glorious times and times of tribulation. Through it all, it's faithful members have had a press to keep praising and worshiping the Lord.

We are proud today of our very own Pastor, Elder Maryann S. Posey, who has been our leader since September of 2000. We have now come full circle and are a few in number but ready and willing to do a great work for the Lord. We look forward to the future because we know God will help increase and bless all those who are willing to serve the Lord.

Deacon William B. Posey has been a member of Mt. Nebo Pentecostal Church all his life. He is the son of the late founder and Overseer Vivian I. Posey. His life has been spent serving the Lord. As a child, he was an active member of the Y.P.W.W. He was also involved in all the choirs and worked in the Vivian I. Posey Society which helped many in the neighboring communities.

Currently, he is the chairman deacon and a trustee of Mt. Nebo. Deacon Posey is not only the First Man of the church but he also enjoys ministering to the congregation. He is a true armor bearer for Pastor Maryann Posey and is committed to his own motto, "No Soul Left Behind."

Our Pastor, Elder Maryann S. Posey, was born in AltaVista, Virginia. At nine years old her mother, Mother Lena Parker, moved the family to Alexandria, Virginia. While Pastor Posey was riding her bike around the corner at twelve years old, she noticed members leaving out of a church service. That church was Mt. Nebo and Pastor Posey felt the love of it's Overseer and congregation's sincere invitation of fellowship immediately. She became a member of Mt. Nebo and enjoyed participating with the church choir and youth's conventions in Cleveland, Ohio. After establishing a strong connected relationship with God and her church family, Pastor Posey began working on her own. Pastor Posey married William B. Posey, son of the late Overseer Vivian I. Posey, on January 12, 1974. God has blessed Pastor Posey with four children, Melvina, Bernard, William and Myles. The Pastor's family has now increased to include two daughter-in-laws, and 6 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.

Pastor Posey is a true representative of the community. She graduated high school from T. C. Williams and never stopped gleaning for knowledge. She has attended several institutions in the area studying God's word. The transition from student to teacher was not hard as she started teaching the Beginner's Sunday School Class. Pastor Posey also aided the community in songs of praise and donations through her work with the missionary department, deaconess group, and Vivian I. Posey Society.

In 1998, Pastor Posey was called into the evangelistic field. She did not know what God had planned for her. During her preparations for her evangelic mission, her family was sent to Vilseck, Germany. The Lord guided her steps as she stayed humble and deep in prayer. While in Germany, she worked with two churches by helping them set up Sunday School and Bible Study programs. She never ceased at working to bring more souls closer to the Lord. As she lived amongst her fellow military women on base, she felt that they had noticed her different lifestyle, and guided them into a better understanding of what it takes to live a Christian life. Pastor Posey felt that she did not have to get up on a soap box but that her actions would let her light shine and help spread the message of God's love.

In 1999, while serving under the leadership of Pastor Jeffrey L. Fullam, of the House of Deliverance Full Gospel Church, she was ordained to minister for God. In a letter of reference, Pastor Fullam states,

"Elder Posey is a spirit filled, fire-baptized woman of God that preaches a dynamic message of love and hope. She is an outstanding leader with unquestionable dedication and commitment to God and the ministry. Her God given leadership skills motivate others to seek God and trust in His word. She truly has a heart of love and compassion that's willing to serve God with its entirety. While being in this ministry, Elder Posey led the Sunday School congregation through anointed studies that shed light and gave hope. Her evangelical approach gave encouragement and understanding that allowed babes and leaders alike to grow and understand the Word of God. Surely, she will be missed."

When Pastor Posey was asked to comment about her calling, she responded by saying that she has been very fortunate to have such a loyal, faithful, and trustworthy family by her side. She said that they have been her Aaron and Hur, supporting her in many ways too numerous to name. She perseveres with the belief that whatever she or her family inspires to do will be done and made prosperous because God is there directing every footstep taken.

Pastor Posey is dedicated to loving Jesus and building God's kingdom. The proof is in the life that she leads and her determination to abide by these terms that she has set for herself. These three are, to love and edify one another, help the needy, and always give praise and glory to God.
