MOUNT COMFORT CEMETERY
6600 South King's Highway (Route 633)
South Alexandria, Virginia USA

Original Information from Volume 5 of the Gravestone Books

Mount Comfort Cemetery, a large commercial cemetery, is located at 6600 South King’s Highway (Route 633), just south of the intersection of King’s Highway and Richmond Highway (Route 1).

The memorial cemetery was established in 1946 by William McGilvary Orr and Viola Louise Merigold Orr on land known in colonial days as the “Cleish” plantation, a thousand-acre tract which lay between Big Hunting and Accotink Creeks, according to a 5 February 1954 article in the Alexandria Gazette and Mrs. Orr’s obituary in the 23 September 1967 issue of the Northern Virginia Sun, as well as information from the cemetery. The Cleish land was subdivided into estates called “Mount Eagle,” “Mount Erin,” where the Orrs lived in the twentieth century, “Retirement” and “Mount Comfort.” The cemetery was laid out on part of the grounds of Retirement and part of Mount Comfort.

The cemetery was formally dedicated on September 23, 1949, with a ceremony which included a speech by Baron Fairfax, Thomas Brian McKelvie of Scotland, the 13th Lord Fairfax, who was visiting Fairfax County at the time. When Mrs. Orr died in 1967, her obituary mentioned that the cemetery was then owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Washington. In 1981, the cemetery was purchased by the Lotz Funeral Homes, Inc. of Houston, Texas (Deed Book 5583, page 1673), as reported by Brian A. Conley in Cemeteries of Fairfax County, Virginia.

The cemetery will answer inquiries from researchers. Their telephone number is 703-765-3800.
