Little Zion Baptist Church Cemetery

EDITOR'S NOTE: This cemetery has been referred by many names over the years. It has been known as the Little Zion Baptist Church Cemetery, the Burke Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, and the Jack and Lizzie Pearson Cemetery, just to name a few.

Here follows an excerpt from the Fairfax Genealogical Society website:

BURKE FREEWILL BAPTIST CHURCH CEMETERY
10018 Burke Lake Road (Route 645)
Burke, Virginia USA

Original Information from Volume 2 of the Gravestone Books

Burke Freewill Baptist Church, 10018 Burke Lake Road (Route 645), Burke, has been known in the past as Denver Chapel Freewill Baptist Church and Pearson Chapel.

The church cemetery, which has been surveyed three times, is very well maintained. It contains many fieldstones, particularly in the rows nearest the church, which are presumably the oldest burials. Due to the use of temporary funeral home markers, many burials recorded in the 1973 survey were not located in the October 1987 and September 1994 surveys; however, information from all three surveys is presented here. (Note: Ames Funeral Home is located in Manassas, Virginia.)

The survey begins with the gravestone nearest the road in the row furthest from the church.

Updates/Corrections/Additions from Volume 6 of the gravestone Books

After the publication of Volume II in 1995, Mr. Craig M. Dexter, Chairman, Trustee Board of the Greater Little Zion Baptist Church, 10185 Zion Drive, Fairfax, wrote to us to explain that the cemetery we had identified as Burke Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery is actually Little Zion Baptist Church Cemetery. The graveyard sits on the site of the original location for Little Zion Baptist Church and the cemetery belongs to that congregation.

Little Zion Baptist Church was founded in 1891, and originally held services at the building at 10018 Burke Lake Road. The congregation still owns the church and the cemetery. Over the years, other congregations such as Burke Freewill Baptist, Denver Chapel and Pearson Chapel have leased the building from Little Zion.
