KEENE FAMILY CEMETERY
Between Silvervine Lane's intersections with Fox Grape Lane and Sweet Spice Court
Springfield, Virginia USA
Original Information from Volume 2 of the Gravestone Books
The Keene Family Cemetery is located on common ground in the Greentree townhouse development on the south side of Silvervine Lane between Silvervine's intersections with Fox Grape Lane and Sweet Spice Court. The cemetery is in a grove of trees, surrounded by a wrought iron fence. The gravestones are broken and lying under a black walnut tree. The site is fairly well maintained.
Three pieces of a carved fieldstone were found at the site in September 1994. The pieces fit together exactly and the fragments read, “W. A. Keen, B. MR 27 1849.” This stone has previously been reported as W. Keen, d. 1849 (or 1847); however, the “B” seems clearly to lie on the same carved line as the date. The fieldstone probably originally bore an “e” at the end of the Keen name. A 14 November 1968 issue of the Springfield Independent which describes the cemetery makes the point that Addison Keen's stone spells the family name without an “e” on the end, while the “roughly inscribed” stone for William Keene includes the “e.”
