Here follows an excerpt from the 1970 Fairfax County Master Inventory of Historic Sites which contained entries from the Historic American Buildings Survey Inventory:
In 1858, according to the will of Mordecai C. Fitzhugh, his land was partitioned and a 174-acre parcel was left to his daughter Mary A. Mason (Deed Book L 4, page 73). The Fairfax County house known as Holly Hill stands on a portion of this land which remained in the Mason family until 1901, but no documentation has been found to establish the date of its construction. The 1879 Hopkins Map of Fairfax County shows the name Mason at this location, and the house is thought to be pre-Civil War, local tradition saying that it was used as a hospital during the war as were so many Fairfax County houses.
The original part of the house is a plain, two-story structure with a steeply pitched, gable roof and interior-end chimneys. A one-and-a-half story addition with gabled dormers has six-over-six windows, as does the older part of the house. Former owner J.M. Woodard extensively modernized the interior and the kitchen now extends beyond the original rear wall of the house and has a modern picture window. The front entrance porch is topped by an unbroken pediment and has square columns.
The house is shielded from the road by extensive plantings, including holly, magnolia and maple trees, as well as boxwood and rose bushes.

Holly Hill
By M. Callahan
According to the Historic American Buildings Survey, Holly Hill was built by Mary Fitzhugh Mason in 1867. Originally part of the 22,000 acre estate of William Fitzhugh, Mary inherited this 174 acre parcel from her father Mordecai C. Fitzhugh in 1858. The home and property were kept in the Mason Family until 1901.
The original house was a two story steeply pitched structure with gabled roof and interior end chimneys. An outbuilding, still present on the property was built as a stable or run-in shelter with wood shingled roof and an open south wall. During the 1952-1970 ownership of J.M. Woodard, a one and a half story addition with gabled windows was built along with the Colonial Revival-style portico and Chippendale side railings. They add a gracious charm to the house and remain true to the original design. Holly Hill is shielded from view by extensive plantings which represent the best of Virginia landscaping.
Holly Hill is located on Statecrest Drive, Annandale
