Hollin Meadows Elementary School opened in 1965. The school's name is derived from Hollin Hall an eighteenth-century plantation home. In the late 1700s, George Mason of Gunston Hall gave the Hollin Hall property to his third son, Thompson Mason. Historians believe the name Hollin Hall refers to the ancestral manor home of the Mason family in England. Thompson Mason's Hollin Hall manor house was destroyed by fire in the 1820's. A small outbuilding called Little Hollin Hall survived the fire and still stands today. In the early 1900's, industrialist Harley Wilson purchased the Hollin Hall property, building a new home which he named Hollin Hall. This building is currently owned by the Mount Vernon Unitarian Church. Hollin Meadows is not the first Fairfax County public school named for Hollin Hall. Hollin Hall Elementary School opened in the late 1940s and Hollin Hills Elementary School opened in 1955. Both schools closed in the early 1980's due to declining enrollment, but the school buildings are still standing today. Hollin Hall Elementary is now a senior center and Hollin Hills Elementary is now a retirement center.
