Here follows an excerpt from the church's website:
Heritage Presbyterian Church is located on eight acres of land at the corner of Fort Hunt and Plymouth Roads in Fairfax County, Virginia. The parish served by the church includes an area which has many interesting historical connections.
When the first white people arrived in Virginia, the area was the home of the Dogue Indians. The King of England granted the first land patent of the area to Captain Giles Brent. Captain Brent married an Indian maiden and they reared their family in the area. In 1740 William Clifton purchased the land from their heirs where the church and its parish are located. He died in 1767 and the land passed to the Washington family. The land became part of George Washington's Mount Vernon Plantation of 5 farms before the American Revolution.
The suburban area around the nation's capital began to grow rapidly after the conclusion of World War II. In 1960, the Presbytery of Washington City bought eight acres and began plans to erect what would be one of thirteen new churches in the greater Washington, D.C. area. In April 1961, Dr. Carroll A. Wood was invited to become the organizing minister of the new church.
The first service of worship was held on June 4, 1961, in the Waynewood Elementary School. At the time of the organization of Heritage Church, the former "Northern" and "Southern" Presbyterian Churches had not yet reunited after their division during the Civil War. Heritage Church was established by the "Northern" church, while our neighboring Mount Vernon Presbyterian Church had been established a few years earlier by the "Southern" church. That's how it came about that our two Presbyterian churches are located so close to each other.
The congregation was officially organized as a church by the Presbytery of Washington City on April 8, 1962. Services continued to be held at the Waynewood Elementary School until construction of a new building was completed in the fall of 1965. The first worship service in the new building was held on Sunday, October 3, 1965.
In 1978, an addition to the original building was constructed, which included new offices, kitchen, Fellowship Hall with a stage and 6 classrooms.
One of the current hallmarks of the Heritage sanctuary is the clerestory stained glass windows. The upper windows were installed in 2002. The windows depict a biblical chronology that flows around the clerestory and incorporates design elements that inspire thought, questions and meditation. The lower windows were designed in 2012 as part of Heritage's 50th anniversary celebration, and installed in January 2013. The church vision statement of Connect~Grow~Serve inspired the final selection of emblems.
