Old Town Alexandria Commemorative Plaques:
Courthouse Square and Courthouse

No look into Alexandria’s past would be complete without a visit to the Alexandria Archaeology Museum. Located on the third floor of the Torpedo Factory, they proudly display the fruits of their labor, some of the thousands of items excavated at sites in Alexandria.

Many workers and volunteers have helped with the digging through the years, but one name stands out – Pamela J. Cressey, the City’s Archaeologist and author of two books on Alexandria’s history.

Cressey was kind enough to assist me. I had read about the excavating of the 300, 400 and 500 blocks of King Street, and inquired if they had any information on the south side of the 500 block.

That area was part of the Urban Redevelopment in the 60s that gave way to the Courthouse and Courthouse Square, as well as other small businesses.

Cressey showed me a milk pitcher that was found in the south side of the 500 block. As noted in her book, Digging into the Past, Alexandria, VA, household items like these were found in privies.
