Here follows an excerpt from the "Jaybird's Jottings" blog written by Jay Roberts:
Colonel John Fitzgerald
Corner of King Street and South Fairfax
We leave Prince Street and Gentry Row and hang a right towards King Street. At the corner of South Fairfax and King lies the Burke and Herbert Bank, the long serving financial institution across from the Alexandria Visitors Center.
Colonel John Fitzgerald, born in Ireland, made his home here. Washington banked on him as a friend, staunch ally, and aide-de-camp during the Revolutionary War.
This big plaque makes a bold statement, commensurate with the many patriotic contributions Fitzgerald made to the first President. He also served as Mayor of the City, and had business interests there.
