CASH FAMILY CEMETERY (REMOVED)

South Alexandria, Virginia USA

Original Information from Volume 5 of the Gravestone Books

When Hayfield High School, which stands at 7630 Telegraph Road in the Hayfield area of the county, was built in 1967, 34 burials in the Cash Family Cemetery were removed and reinterred in Fairfax City Cemetery (see Volume III). The discovery and removal of this cemetery are described in the 13 July 1967 Alexandria Gazette and the 14 July 1967 Northern Virginia Sun. The one extant gravestone from the cemetery was erected over the burials in Section II, Lot 352A, and reads as follows:

Departed this life
February 9, 1870
Susan Cash
Wife of Elijah Cash, Jr.
In the 87 year of her age.
“Blessed are the dead who
die in the Lord.”

(Note: One surveyor has read the fourth line as: “Wife of Elijah Cash, dec.” The word is worn and difficult to read.)
