Here follows an excerpt from "Post WW2 History of Springfield, Virginia and The Crestwood Construction Corp." as written by Robyn Carter:
Not to be excluded from adding to the retail choices in his own dream town, As the population grew fast during 1953-54, Edward R. Carr broke ground for, what was originally known as "The Springfield City Shopping Center" and opened in the spring of 1955. It was located in the area surrounded by Backlick Road and Amherst Avenue (and later an extension westward across Backlick along Bland Street). The largest tenant of that center was also the largest super market in town at that time, known as Bon Food on the Backlick Road side of the building, with various smaller retailers on the Amherst Avenue side. Bon Food opened on May 12, 1955. It remained a community fixture into the 1970's.
Later, other major supermarket chains moved into the Springfield area, thus taking on some of the volume of the smaller grocery retailers like Bon Food and The Springfield Market. From a historical standpoint, thankfully the building still stands but its general popularity in the community today is rather dubious with the entire building being used as The Paper Moon night club.
