Bren Mar Park Elementary School

Here follows a school history as published by Fairfax County Public Schools on their website:

Bren Mar Park Elementary School opened on September 9, 1957. Did you know that our school was the first school in Fairfax County to be built with pre-made parts? The original walls were made in Norfolk, Virginia then trucked to Fairfax County and assembled like a big jigsaw puzzle. Back then our school only had ten classrooms and just 300 students. Today we have more than 540!

What's in a Name?
Learn about the origin of our school's name in this video produced for Fairfax County Public Schools’ cable television channel Red Apple 21:

Bren Mar Park Elementary School opened in September 1957. The school was built on land that was formerly part of Mount Hebron, a 1,080-acre plantation established by the McPherson and Hepburn families in the early 19th century in 1848. Joseph Edsall, a congressman from New Jersey purchased Mount Hebron at auction. An advertisement for the sale published in the Alexandria Gazette newspaper described the property as having 250 acres of very fine soil, more than 800 acres of forest, several farm buildings and two mill sites. Edsall Road, which crossed through Mount Hebron, was named for Joseph Edsall's family.
Following World War II, rapid population growth led to an ever-increasing demand for residential housing in Fairfax County. In 1952, the Magazine Brothers construction company helmed by brothers Samuel and Sheldon Magazine, purchased some 230 acres of the former Mount Hebron property and began development of a new housing subdivision they called Bren Mar Park. The Bren Mar Park neighborhood was named for the Magazine brothers children, specifically Samuel Magazine's daughter Brenda and Sheldon Magazine's son, Mark. In 1956, the Magazine brothers donated 9.6 acres of land in Bren Mar Park to the Fairfax County School Board for a school site. The construction of Bren Mar Park Elementary was unique in that it was the first school to be predominantly built out of prefabricated materials. The walls constructed around a steel frame with a brick veneer on the outside and pre-installed windows were built in Norfolk, Virginia then trucked to Fairfax County and assembled on a cinder block foundation. The 10-room school took just 90 days to construct and was finished seven weeks ahead of schedule at a cost of slightly more than $227,400. Originally designed to house 300 pupils, today Bren Mar Park has grown to accommodate approximately 540 students.
