Bayliss Family Cemetery

Here follows an excerpt from the Fairfax County Genealogical Society website:

Original Information from Volume 5 of the Gravestone Books

The Bayliss Family Cemetery sits in the midst of a desolate trash heap on property which is now a railroad right-of-way, a few hundred feet north of Lorton Road (Route 642), and just to the west of Pohick Creek.

A small unpaved road leads from Lorton Road to an old house which has fallen into ruin. The yard surrounding the house is covered with garbage and trash of every description. Several smaller buildings, also in states of decay, stand in the woods toward the creek.

When facing the house from the road side, the cemetery is to the right, on the other side of a row of cedars. The plot is about 25 by 25 paces and marked by several low concrete posts on the sides and at each corner. The posts support a low pipe fence (about eight inches high) which surrounds the cemetery. Within the enclosure the ground is covered with periwinkle, poison ivy, weeds, low bushes, downed limbs and trash. Some old cedars stand within the fence.

The location of the cemetery was brought to the attention of the Society in 1990 by Bernice Bayliss Rison who had learned of the site through her family research. She and her husband located the family burial grounds in 1989 and, when they had cleared the area of overgrowth, counted at least twenty graves in the cemetery, some with fieldstone markers. Mrs. Rison said that the area was known as the Bayliss Farm in the early 1900s.

Information about possible burials in this cemetery are on file in the Virginia Room, Fairfax City Regional Library.

In his publication Cemeteries of Fairfax County, Virginia, Brian Conley notes that a deed in Deed Book F6, page 1, recorded in 1900, reserves a Bayliss Family Cemetery. The location of that burial site is not known.
