Here follows the inscription written on this roadside historical marker:
Alexandria Post No. 24, American Legion
This structure stands on the site of a late eighteenth-century brick dwelling, part of a complex owned by John Wise and leased to John Gadsby, both noted Alexandria tavern keepers.
The Alexandria Post No. 24, American Legion, purchased the Gadsby Tavern Complex in 1929 to save it for historic preservation. The Post deeded the complex to the city of Alexandria in 1972, with the proviso that it continue to use space within this building as its headquarters in perpetuity.
Erected by Kate Waller Barrett Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Nearby dedication plaque for Sidney Weil:
In memory of
Sidney Weil
Commander Alexandria Post #24
1930-31
The American Legion
Based on the information in the main plaque, Weil would have been one of the first commanders after the post moved to its current location in 1929.

Old Town Alexandria Commemorative Plaques:
American Legion Post 24
400 Cameron
It’s an appropriate coincidence that my next two commemorative plaques are located at the American Legion. An active lodge that hosts events for veterans, the building was in the news earlier in the year when a couple discovered a Thomas Jefferson letter in an upstairs office. Army veteran Tom Hewitt and his wife Candice Bennett made the finding. It is hoped the City will preserve and display the letter (Anne Miller, Washington Post, January 25)
